Yoga is great for stress relief and pain management.  When we stress the sympathetic nervous system and hormonal pathways are activated and the stress chemical cortisol is released from the adrenal glands.  Yoga calms the nervous system and reduces the levels of cortisol which reduces the experience of stress. Also by practicing a combination of asanas (yoga poses) and meditation we reduce physical aches and pains.

 

Yoga is great for flexibility.  Through yoga we improve our flexibility and increase our range of motion.  Over time our ligaments, tendons, and muscles lengthen and increase elasticity.

 

Yoga increases strength.  Yoga asanas use every muscle in the body, increasing strength literally from head to toe.  Yoga also relieves muscle tension throughout the body.

 

Yoga for weight management.  With the increased muscle tone we gain through yoga our body naturally burns more calories throughout our regular day.  Yoga also promotes body awareness and positive self image.

 

Yoga improves circulation and the cardiovascular system.  Yoga helps to improve circulation by efficiently moving oxygenated blood to the body’s cells. Yoga also lowers the heart rate, increases endurance and improves oxygen intake during exercise.

 

Yoga brings you into the present moment.  The more we practice, the more aware we become of our surroundings and the world around us.  It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time and memory.  The meditative effects of yoga help cultivate inner peace.
